This piece started as a live painting at the laundromat art show in Deerfield Beach in 2023 - showcasing Jesus Christ in signature Chappe style. 

After being displayed at the Chappe residence for 3 years, and unfinished - the artist (Lawrence) decided to revisit the painting, make some changes and re-publish it anew. Chappe is not a religious man, but a few times in his life he's been called to visit the topic of Christ through art. 

But Why? "I believe that there's enough evidence that Jesus Christ was a real person who walked amongst us. But even if that weren't true, which is quite possible - there's an undeniable about Jesus, the way he allegedly lived his life and treated others - My favorite Jesus quote, and im paraphrasing 'My friend, you will do even greater things that I have done'. I think he means, once he shows people the way they can take his knowledge, use it as a foundation and do even better. 
During my 20's, through photography on a series of self portraits I explored the idea of Jesus being a black man. Think about it - he allegedly was born in Africa over 2000 years ago, when inter-continental traveling was not a thing you did quickly nor easily. Europeans didn't particularly spend months walking to go live in Africa, or vice versa. So the highest probability is that he was black born of black parents. Some may say this is not important, but if he wasn't then why would they paint him white to begin with? - Furthermore I think it's important that I explore Jesus as a regular black dude that was cool, spread good vibes, liked to party, liked getting together with his homies and even dealt with some bullshit challenges."
